Artist talk- Gary Power

Today was the artist talk by Gary. We were able to learn and understand what kind of art Gary created, his ideas for his art and his progression throughout the years.

He started off by showing us a video he had colaborated with someone on filmed while the floods went through his house. He filmed scenes of the flood running through the town, as well as the aftermath of the floods on his house. He called the video a response to the flood, naming the piece 'Playing after the flood'.

Gary Power bases homself in Cumbria and focuses a lot on drawings and sculptures. He uses his interests in arcitecture, structure and materials to create his peices, creating most of his drawings in wether 2D or 3D. He uses a lot of patterns and abstractions in his sculptures and drawings, and gets all of his ideas from the surroundings, such as the light inside cathederals and churches.

Gary is known for his sculpture 'Red, Green and Blue', created in 1988, which is situated in Newcastle Univesity ever since he created it. He is also known for sculpting 'The Prudhoe Badger', a sculpture formed on land, made part of the grass surrounding it.

From 2008, gary was more focused on drawing than sculpture, creating lots of different drawings with different inks nd acrylics, usually 2 at a time, and cutting them up into strips. Then he would stick them back together in a purposeful order.
