Art Crit 27.10.16

Today was the first of the art crits we will have every thursday, which lets us analyse other students work and give helpful and critical feedback on some of the pieces they have created in their studios. Today was focused on Andy Parkin, Stewart Teers and William Ramsey.

Andy had brought in about 4 pieces of work for us to look at. One of the questions brought up was why were his paintings on mirrors. Many ideas went around, including the idea that the man painted on the mirror was vain. Another idea I had was that mirrors are supposed to be reflective and it is defeating the object of a mirror if we see another face in it. Its sort of like an illusion. It would be seen as strange.

Stewart had brought in a few prints and a sculpture. He seems to be very intregued in leaves and nature, keeping with the theme throughout his work. The sculpture was the most interesting as it showed off a ceramic head with a band of leaves around the head. What was interesting is that he had hand made the head from ceramic, but painted it to seem like wood. It makes a natural thing seem almost man made and not natural at all; the total opposite of what his work seems to portray.

Finally, William showed off some of his tape canvases, creating perfectly straight lines from different coloured electrical tape. His art seemed to be something you would see as a centre peice in a posh pristine white kitchen or living room. It was very eye catching. His use of everyday materials has created art that stands out from everything else, creating lines that not even paint would be able to accomplish.
